Free, and the part that decides everything.
Six items, none of which cost money, all of which need attention rather than expertise. Skipping this phase is why so many locksmiths conclude that SEO does not work.
Nothing further down this page compensates for getting phase one wrong.
A misconfigured profile with excellent content and strong links is still a misconfigured profile, and it is one enforcement sweep away from being invisible.
Decide the address question honestly
Staffed location shown, unstaffed address hidden. This one decision causes more suspensions in this trade than anything else.
Set the service area to where you actually drive
The radius you cover at two in the morning, not the one you would accept in daylight. Inflating it dilutes relevance and invites scrutiny.
Fix the primary category
It decides which searches you are eligible for before anything else gets a vote. Match it to the work you actually want.
Write down one canonical name, address and phone
One agreed version, in a file, that everything else gets checked against. Most inconsistency exists because there was never an original.
Make every directory match it exactly
Not similar. Identical. Start with the directories that carry weight in this trade rather than buying a listing service.
Assemble the verification evidence file
Licensing where your state requires it, insurance, premises or vehicle proof. Do it now, while nothing is wrong.
Six pages, built for four different people.
This phase is where most of the money in the trade is either captured or left on the table. The last item on the list is the one almost nobody does and the one with the highest value attached to it.
Build one page per search intent
Emergency, planned residential, automotive and commercial. Four pages minimum, because they are four different buyers.
Publish real price ranges
With the variables that move them stated. The highest-trust page you can put up, and the one competitors using bait pricing cannot copy.
Make the phone number impossible to miss
Header, body and a fixed bar that does not cover content. Then check it on an actual phone rather than a resized browser.
Match your schema to your profile
Structured data saying the same name, address and phone as everywhere else. A mismatch here is an own goal.
Fix speed on a mid-range phone
On a poor connection, which is the connection a locked-out customer actually has.
Build the commercial page nobody builds
Low volume, high ticket, almost no competition. It will look like a waste of time for about four months.
The part that never finishes.
Five ongoing habits rather than five tasks. This is the phase agencies sell first, and it is genuinely valuable once the two phases above it are in place.
Make review requests routine
At the van, from the technician, every job. Recency matters more in this trade than total count.
Publish consistently rather than occasionally
Four good pages a month beats sixteen thin ones, and beats thirty pages published in one burst and then nothing.
Earn placements on real domains
Guest posts and Web 2.0 properties with live URLs you can open. If you cannot open it, it did not happen.
Monitor the profile for drift
Hours get edited, categories get changed, aggregators republish old numbers. This never stops needing checking.
Report listings that look wrong, properly
As maintenance, with specifics, expecting nothing. Never as a strategy and never as something anybody can promise you.
Doing these backwards is the expensive mistake.
The three phases are not equally urgent and they are not equally expensive. Phase one costs nothing and prevents the failure mode that removes a business from the map entirely. Phase three costs the most and compounds the slowest.
Sold in the reverse order, which is the industry norm, the money goes into authority for a record that cannot be verified. The work is real, the result is nothing, and the shop concludes that search does not work for locksmiths.
It does work. It just has a prerequisite in this trade that most trades do not have, and it is free.
| PHASE | COST | WHAT SKIPPING IT DOES |
|---|---|---|
| One | Free | Puts everything above it at risk of disappearing in one sweep. |
| Two | One time | Leaves the highest-ticket work in your market uncontested. |
| Three | Monthly | Caps how far the first two phases can take you. |
Calls from the profile, by month
The number that pays for everything. Impressions rising while calls stay flat usually means a category or radius problem rather than a ranking one.
The mix, not just the volume
If the extra calls are all lockouts, phase two is not finished. The point of the commercial page is a different kind of call, not more of the same kind.
Citations still in disagreement
A count that only ever goes down. If it stops moving, somebody stopped doing the unglamorous half of the work.
Placements you can open
Every month, as live URLs. A report you cannot click is not evidence of anything.
On the order.
Can I do this myself?01
Most of phase one, yes, and you should, because it is free and it is the part that matters most. Profile configuration and consistency work needs attention rather than expertise. Phase three, the authority building, is where doing it yourself stops being realistic for somebody who also runs vans.
How long does the whole thing take?02
Phase one takes days of attention spread over a couple of weeks. Phase two takes a month or two. Phase three is continuous and does not finish. Map visibility often moves inside eight to twelve weeks, organic on competitive terms usually four to six months, and none of that is a guarantee.
What if I have already done some of this?03
Then start at the first item you cannot confidently tick and work down. The order matters more than the completeness. Most shops that think they have done phase one have done four of the six items and have an inconsistency sitting in a directory they have forgotten about.
Why is content so far down the list?04
Because publishing into a site whose business record is inconsistent is spending money on the wrong problem. Content compounds, so it should start early, and it should start after the foundation exists rather than instead of it.
What is the single most common mistake?05
Starting at phase three. Buying links and content while the business profile is misconfigured is the most expensive way to make no progress in this trade, and it is what most locksmiths are sold first because it is the easiest thing to invoice.
